A Comparison of the Relationship between the Golden Ratio and Anatomical Characteristics of the Supraorbital Foramen in Bare Skulls Belonging to the Byzantine Era and Modern Era International Journal of Morphology
Bakirci,S; Kafa,I. M; Coskun,I; Buyukuysal,M. C; Barut,C.
The aim of the present study is to determine the frequency of the occurrence of supraorbital foramen/notch (SOF/N) in the skulls of the people who lived in the modern era and the late Byzantine era, to determine the symmetry and the asymmetry between the two halves of the skulls by measuring the linear distance to various landmarks, to check the consistency between the location of the SOF/N and the golden ratio by calculating the ratio between linear distances and to evaluate the differences between the skulls from both historical periods. In the study, the frequency of the occurrence of the supraorbital notch in the skulls from the Byzantine era was found to be 26.60 % on the right and 13.30 % on the left while it was 14.30 % on the right and 9.52 % on...

A Complex Variation of the Parietal and Visceral Branches of the Abdominal Aorta International Journal of Morphology
Unver Dogan,Nadire; Fazliogullari,Zeliha; Yilmaz,Mehmet Tugrul; Uysal,Ismihan Ilknur; Cicekcibasi,Aynur Emine; Ulusoy,Mahinur; Gunaslan,Pervin.
Variations in the branches of the abdominal aorta were determined during a routine abdominal region dissection of a 70-year-old male cadaver. Left gastric artery arose as the first root from antero-lateral of aorta. Coeliacomesenteric trunk occurred as a thick root. After 29.9mm, coeliacomesenteric trunk bifurcated as coeliac trunk and superior mesenteric artery. Coeliac trunk bifurcated as splenic artery and common hepatic artery. These multiple variations which change the normal anatomic structure of the abdominal aorta have to be kept in mind by surgeons, radiologists and anatomists.

A Computed Tomographic Study of Umbilical Anatomy: The Relationship between Umbilical Thickness and Diameter International Journal of Morphology
Kim,Maru; Oh,Seong-Taek.
Laparoscopic surgeries were first introduced in the 1980s. More recently, similar techniques such as natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery and other advanced transumbilical surgeries have been developed. With all of these surgical advances, basic information about the umbilicus is lacking. This study evaluated the relationship between umbilical diameter and thickness, as well as the underlying vessels, in order to develop a simple means of assessing umbilical anatomy. We retroactively reviewed 842 computed tomography images that included the umbilicus. Umbilical thickness, diameter, type of vessel located beneath the umbilicus, depth to the vessel, and other parameters were measured. Age and sex were noted, and their relationship was analyzed as...

A critical view to explanations for the maximal value of 50 % of genetic recombination RChHN
VALENZUELA,CARLOS Y; PÉREZ-ALZOLA,PATRICIA; SANTOS,MANUEL J.
The maximal value of 50 % of genetic recombination (RF = recombination fraction) between two linked gene loci has been explained by two models: (i) the restriction of crossovers to only two of the four chromatids of a tetrad (tetrad model); (ii) the limit of the occurrence of an odd number of crossovers between two loci, when the expected number of crossovers tends to infinite (odd-even model). This article shows that (i) is wrong. If tetrads were responsible for the maximal 50 % RF, sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) should display a maximal 100 % RF. In mammalian CHO cells we found that SCE yield a maximal 50 % recombination. Also, we demonstrated that the maximal 50 % RF for tetrads occurs because the sum of odd order coefficients in the binomial...

A developmental approach to homology and brain evolution RChHN
ABOITIZ,FRANCISCO.
Although homology is central to evolutionary interpretations, establishing it has become a highly disputed issue in some instances. Here I argüe for a developmental understanding of evolution, where modifications of the developmental programs are a key source of evolutionary novelty. Although this perspective is not new, in comparative neurobiology it has remained controversial. Specifically, the evolutionary origin of the mammalian neocortex has been a particularly debated point. I propose a perspective that could help reconcile a long standing controversy: either the mammalian neocortex corresponds as a whole to the dorsal hemisphere of reptiles and birds, or alternatively its lateral aspect corresponds to the lateral cerebral hemisphere and is partly...

A dichotomous species of Codium (Bryopsidales, Chlorophyta) is colonizing northern Chile RChHN
GONZÁLEZ,ALEJANDRA; SANTELICES,BERNABÉ.
In late 2001 and early 2002, a dichotomous species of Codium appeared colonizing the low intertidal and shallow subtidal bottoms of Caldera Bay, northern Chile (27° 03’ S, 70° 51’ W). Due to the ecological and economic impact the species is having in Caldera Bay and its potential spread along the Chilean coastline, we studied the taxonomic identity of the species and examined its relationships with other dichotomous species of Codium reported for temperate Pacific South America. Morphological analyses suggest that the seaweeds from Caldera Bay belong to Codium fragile (Suringar) Hariot. Not only is there strong agreement in internal and external morphological characters, but among all the species reported for Peru and Chile, this is the only one exhibiting...

A Different Origin of the Right Gastro-omental Artery International Journal of Morphology
Okamura,Aldo; Alvarez,Daniela; Genovez,Paula; Caldeira,Eduardo José; da Cunha,Marcelo Rodrigues; Carvalho,Cesar Alexandre Fabrega.
The gastro-omental artery is one of the branches of the common hepatic artery. Alterations in the embryonic development of the ventral splanchnic arteries can cause marked variations. A rare variant of the right gastro-omental artery was observed during dissection of a 50-year-old male cadaver. The occurrence of this variant has not been reported in the specialized literature. This case of a different origin of the gastro-omental artery is described in detail in order to provide information that may contribute to upper abdominal surgeries.

A Direct Anatomical Study of the Morphology and Functionality of Disco-malleolar and Anterior Malleolar Ligaments International Journal of Morphology
Ramírez Aristeguieta,Luis Miguel; Ballesteros Acuña,Luis Ernesto; Sandoval Ortiz,German Pablo.
The disco-malleolar and anterior malleolar ligaments are common to the middle ear, the temporomandibular joint and the jaw, all of them sharing a common embryological origin; these ligaments' morphometric and functional aspects were studied in 23 temporal bones. Experimental design: The epitympanum roof and the temporomandibular joint roof were elevated by micro-dissection of the middle cranial fossa, exposing both disco-malleolar and anterior malleolar ligaments and their association with the malleus, the temporomandibular joint disc and the mandibular lingula. Principal observations: Both ligaments start in the malleus and take anterior and divergent routes towards the temporomandibular joint and lingula, passing through Huguier's canal. The...

A Dynamic Decision Support System for Farm Water Management in Surface Irrigation: Model Development and Application Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Flores,Carlos I.; Holzapfel,Eduardo A.; Lagos,Octavio.
An online dynamic decision support system (DDSS) was developed, to support the farm water management in surface irrigation. The online DDSS was based on the formulation and integration of three components: a dynamic-relational data base, an administrator model, and a graphical user interface. The DDSS allows routines of actualization, edition and addition of online data, providing information in real time. The online DDSS was applied in an orange orchard (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) cv. Valencia Late under furrow irrigation. The results pointed out that the time irrigation cutoff was the main significant management factor, to decrease the hazard of leaching, superficial runoff and percolation. Applying the results obtained with the DDSS, furrow irrigation...

A fast and simple assay to quantify bacterial leukotoxin activity Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Oppermann,Tobias; Schwarz,Stefan; Busse,Nadine; Czermak,Peter.
Background: Mannheimia haemolytica is the primary bacterial pathogen in causing bovine respiratory disease with tremendous annual losses in the cattle industry. The leukotoxin from M. haemolytica is the predominant virulence factor. Several leukotoxin activity assays are available but not standardized regarding sample preparation and cell line. Furthermore, these assays suffer from a high standard error, a prolonged time consumption and often complex sample pretreatments, which is important from the bioprocess engineering point of view. Results: Within this study, an activity assay based on the continuous cell line BL3.1 combined with a commercial available adenosine triphosphate viability assay kit was established. The leukotoxin activity was found to be...

A herpes simplex viral vector expressing green fluorescent protein can be used to visualize morphological changes in high-density neuronal culture Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Falk,Torsten; Strazdas,Lori A.; Borders,Rebecca S.; Kilani,Ramsey K.; Yool,Andrea J.; Sherman,Scott J..
High-density cultures of mammalian neurons offer a model system for studies of brain development, but the morphological features of individual neurons is difficult to ascertain. We show that a herpes virus vector expressing a bioluminescent protein allows detailed morphometric analyses of living neurons in complex culture environments. Expression of enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP) was constitutively driven in neurons using the herpes simplex virus amplicon system. This system allowed us to make novel observations regarding development in high-density cultures from rat hippocampus and cerebellum. After the phase of initial neurite outgrowth, maturing neurons continue to show rapid remodeling of the neurite branches (0.79 ± 0.11 mum/h per neurite;...

A high-fat diet decreases GABA concentration in the frontal cortex and hippocampus of rats Biol. Res.
Sandoval-Salazar,Cuauhtemoc; Ramírez-Emiliano,Joel; Trejo-Bahena,Aurora; Oviedo-Solís,Cecilia I.; Solís-Ortiz,Martha Silvia.
BACKGROUND: It has been proposed that the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) plays a key role in the regulation of food intake and body weight by controlling the excitability, plasticity and the synchronization of neuronal activity in the frontal cortex (FC). It has been also proposed that the high-fat diet (HFD) could disturb the metabolism of glutamate and consequently the GABA levels, but the mechanism is not yet clearly understood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a HFD on the GABA levels in the FC and hippocampus of rats RESULTS: The HFD significantly increased weight gain and blood glucose levels, whereas decreased the GABA levels in the FC and hippocampus compared with standard diet-fed rats CONCLUSIONS: HFD...

A Histological Assessment of the Cell Death Induced by Haloperidol on Prefrontal Cortex International Journal of Morphology
Ghanbari,Ali; Kakebaraei,Seyran; Khazaei,Mozafar.
Neuroleptic drugs such as haloperidol has side effects on extrapyramidal pathways. Tardive Dyskinesia is the most important complication. The most characteristic feature of this Tardive Dyskinesia is involuntary movements of mouth and face. In regard to this problem, the induction of gliosis and cell death in the nervous tissue are considered. In this study, adult Sprague-Dawley rats were used as experimental models. Rats were divided into control and experimental groups. The rats were kept in the animal house under standard conditions during experiments. The control rats were intraperitoneally treated with normal saline for 6 days. The experimental samples were treated for the same time with 2, 5 and 10 mg haloperidol. After the trial period, the rats...

A hybrid zone of two toad sister species, Rhinella atacamensis and R. arunco (Anura: Bufonidae), defined by a consistent altitudinal segregation in watersheds RChHN
CORREA,CLAUDIO; MÉNDEZ,MARCO A; ARAYA,SERGIO; LOBOS,GABRIEL; PALMA,R. EDUARDO.
Delimiting the spatial extension of a hybrid zone is essential to understand its historical origin and to identify the geographical and/or environmental factors which delimit it. Rhinella atacamensis and R. arunco are two sister species which together inhabit Chile between 25° and 38° S. Their distribution limits coincide at about 32° S, where recently it was reported that they hybridize in a small watershed (Pupío creek). Although the genetic evidence suggests that these two species form a hybrid swarm, they are not mixed homogeneously in the entire watershed, but rather are spatially segregated: R. arunco is found in the lower part of the creek and R. atacamensis in the higher part. An extensive exploration north and south of 32° S revealed other...

A laboratory scale device for microencapsulation of genetically engineered cells into alginate beads Electron. J. Biotechnol.
León Fiszman,Gabriel; Karara,Armando Luis; Finocchiaro,Liliana María Elena; Glikin,Gerardo Claudio.
The microencapsulation of recombinant cells, widely used for in vitro high-density cell culture, is a novel and potentially cost-effective method of in vivo heterologous protein delivery, where the protein producing cells are immunologically protected from tissue rejection. We report here a simple, reliable and inexpensive laboratory method to generate calcium alginate microcapsules containing genetically engineered, interleukin-2 expressing, Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells.

A legume genomics resource: The Chickpea Root Expressed Sequence Tag Database Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Jayashree,B; Buhariwalla,Hutokshi K; Shinde,Sanjeev; Crouch,Jonathan H.
Chickpea, a lesser-studied grain legume, is being investigated due to its taxonomic proximity with the model legume genome Medicago truncatula and its ability to endure and grow in relatively low soil water contents making it a model legume crop for the study of agronomic response to drought stress. Public databases currently contain very few sequences from chickpea associated with expression in root tissues. However, root traits are likely to be one of the most important components of drought tolerance in chickpea. Thus, we have generated a set of over 2800 chickpea expressed sequence tags (ESTs) from a library constructed after subtractive suppressive hybridization (SSH) of root tissue from two closely related chickpea genotypes possessing different...

A LIGHT AIRCRAFT AS A LOW-FREQUENCY SOUND SOURCE FOR ACOUSTICAL OCEANOGRAPHY Gayana
Buckingham,Michael J; Giddens,Eric M.
The sound from a propeller-driven aircraft is largely generated by the propeller itself. Its acoustic signature consists of a series of harmonics, the lowest of which, the fundamental, is typically in the region of 100 Hz, with the higher harmonics appearing at multiples of the fundamental. Experiments have recently been conducted off the coast of southern California, using several different types of single-engine, light aircraft, which show that the first 10 or so propeller harmonics are detectable not in the atmosphere, in the water column and also on sensors buried to a depth of about 1 m in the seabed. The Doppler-shifted comb of frequencies produced by an aircraft propeller is the basis of a recently developed technique for making point measurements...

A light- and electron microscopic study of primordial germ cells in the zebra fish (Danio rerio) Biol. Res.
Deniz Koç,Nazan; Yüce,Rikap.
In sexually reproducing organisms, primordial germ cells (PGCs) give rise to the cells of the germ line, the gametes. In many animals, PGCs are set apart from somatic cells early during embryogenesis. This study explores the origin of primordial germ cells (PGCs) of the zebra fish and examines their morphology during early development (1st day-15th day). PGCs were selectively stained by the alkaline phosphatase histochemical reaction and viewed by light and electron microscopy from the time they are first detectable in the yolk sac endoderm. PGCs occurred in the subendodermal space on the syncytial periblast; differing from the surrounding endodermal cells. Later the PGCs moved to between the blastoderm and yolk sac and transferred to the dorsal mesentery...

A Limit for Antler Length in Captive Marals International Journal of Morphology
Korzhikenova,N; Sambetbaev,A; Iglikov,O; Parés-Casanova,P. M.
The main aim of this study was to estimate phenotypic correlations among live weight, withers height, rump height, chest depth, chest width, thoracic girth, body length, hip widths (between iliac tuberosities and between ischial tuberosities) and forelimb cannon perimeter with antler length measured during the growth of marals on a Kazakh farm. The data comprised 18 animals studied during their growth (at 18 months and at 24 months). In maral, the first period of antler productivity takes place at the age of 24 months. This fact should be taken into account in order to select the best animals for antler production, which is the main purpose for farming this species.
